Schemelli's Musical Hymnal The collection Advent and Christmas Carols from Schemelli's Hymnal , edited by Ilse Hechler, comprises Christmas chorales and songs from Johann Sebastian Bach's circle, originally published in Schemelli's Hymnal (Leipzig, 1736). The organist of St. Peters Rome, Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643) is looked upon as Italy's most famous organ composer. Apart from numerous organ works appearing in print and some church music that has come down to us in manuscript form, he himself published a book of one- to four-part canzonas with a basso continuo part (1628). Frescobaldi does not indicate any precise instrumentation although the use of brass instruments was undoubtedly intended. The organ may ,of course, be replaced by a positive organ or a hapsichord. This quartet composition represents an attempt to combine different musical stylistic elements - including various jazz styles, atonality, motivic-thematic work and improvisational approaches - in a coherent musical context.

When Johann Sebastian Bach was in Berlin in 1718 and 1719, he met Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg. He dedicated six concertos to him under the title “Concerts avec plusieurs instruments”. Today, these works are known as the Brandenburg Concertos and are considered as important masterpieces of music history. The present work has been arranged for brass.
