Isaak Albéniz’s Malagueña – originally composed for piano – is now an integral part of the classical guitar repertoire; here in an arrangement by Andrés Paléologo. Isaac Albéniz’s “Malagueña,” Op. 165 No. 3, was composed in 1890 as part of his piano cycle España – Seis hojas de álbum . The piece combines characteristic Andalusian dance rhythms with expressive melodies and colorful harmonies, creating a distinctive Spanish soundscape. In Andrés Paléologo’s arrangement, Albéniz’s music, originally written for piano, is adapted for classical guitar. Particularly appealing is the close affinity between Albéniz’s piano writing and the expressive possibilities of the guitar. Guitar-like accompaniment patterns, rhythmic impulses, and subtle tonal colors can be brought to life naturally on the instrument. The interplay between rhythmically vibrant passages and lyrical, expressive sections gives the “Malagueña” its distinctive character. Paléologo’s arrangement makes these musical qualities accessible on the guitar, combining Albéniz’s Romantic sound world with the instrument’s characteristic tonal colors.

Vrouyr Mazmanian’s Caprice Flamenco is a capriccio for guitar in the Malagueña style. The work combines a stylistic orientation towards a Spanish dance and guitar tradition with the technical resources of the classical guitar. A contemporary repertoire description classifies the composition as being of intermediate difficulty. Vrouyr Mazmanian (b. 1904 in Ruse, Bulgaria) was a guitarist and pedagogue of Armenian heritage. Following his studies and artistic activities in Paris, where he studied with, among others, Jacques Tessarech and Emilio Pujol, he settled in Beirut, where he devoted himself to the advancement of guitar playing and education. Caprice Flamenco is one of his original compositions.

Introductory Exercises and Short Pieces This method introduces guitar students progressively to playing in different positions on the guitar through a series of introductory exercises and short pieces. It is intended primarily as a supplement to and extension of standard guitar methods, which tend to focus extensively on first-position playing while devoting comparatively little attention to playing in other positions. To make the material more appealing to students, at the heart of the method are student–teacher guitar duets. The student’s deliberately simple guitar part is musically supported and sustained by the teacher’s playing, providing a musical framework in which the student can gradually become familiar with playing in different positions.

Die insgesamt 30 Stücke des Gitarren-Riesen stellen modern arrangierte und komponierte Songs verschiedenster Provenienz dar. Inhaltlich werden unterschiedliche Aspekte des Gitarrenspiels abgedeckt. Damit eignet sich das Heft hevorragend sowohl für Anfänger*innen im Gitarrenspiel als auch für erfahrene Schüler*innen. Um neben dem Einzelspiel auch das gemeinsame Musizieren zu schulen, sind die Stücke für eine, zwei oder auch drei Gitarren angelegt. Einige Stücke sind zudem mit Akkordsymbolen versehen, die sehr gut von einem anderen Schüler, aber auch vom Lehrer gespielt werden können.
